Astigmatism

Eye Conditions

Astigmatism is an irregular curvature of the cornea which is the clear, front surface covering the iris and pupil.  This results in blurred vision in various distances as the light is not focusing properly on the retina (the back of the eye).  Most people have some degree of Astigmatism according to DoctorsofOptometry.ca and it is caused by factors such as hereditary conditions, development of the eye during growing phases and pressure of the eyelids on the cornea.

Diagnosis can be determined during a comprehensive eye examination with your eye doctor.  Symptoms can include blurred or distorted vision, eye strain and eye fatigue and headaches.

Treatment can include eyeglasses, contact lenses and vision therapy.
