Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in Canada according to the CNIB. It is a disease that causes damage to the eye’s optic nerve. This damage, which is a fluid build- up and increased pressure on the eye, can lead to gradual vision loss and blindness.
Fluid build-up and optic nerve damage can result from various factors although it can also occur when eye pressure is normal. A trauma to the eye or area can also increase pressure. It is more common in adults over 40 and the risk increases if you have diabetes, cardiovascular disease, suffered from a concussion, high blood pressure and eye trauma. Most patients are unaware they have the eye disease until irrevocable damage to the optic nerve is done. An important reason to have ongoing, regular eye health examinations with your Lynn Valley Eye Doctor.
Treatment for Glaucoma is only available if caught early. Eye drops and/ or laser surgery are options for assisting in maintaining current level of vision. Once vision loss occurs due to Glaucoma it cannot be restored.
