Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in Canada according to the CNIB. It is a disease that causes damage to the eye’s optic nerve. This damage, which is a fluid build- up and increased pressure on the eye, can lead to gradual vision loss and blindness.
Fluid build-up and optic nerve damage can result from various factors although it can also occur when eye pressure is normal. Â A trauma to the eye or area can also increase pressure. Â It is more common in adults over 40 and the risk increases if you have diabetes, cardiovascular disease, suffered from a concussion, high blood pressure and eye trauma. Â Most patients are unaware they have the eye disease until irrevocable damage to the optic nerve is done. Â An important reason to have ongoing, regular eye health examinations with your Lynn Valley Eye Doctor.
Treatment for Glaucoma is only available if caught early. Â Eye drops and/ or laser surgery are options for assisting in maintaining current level of vision. Â Once vision loss occurs due to Glaucoma it cannot be restored.
